Directions to Vaalkop – Mapumalanga.

This fly site is for fly aways only 


From Johannesburg take the N12 East freeway towards Witbank.
From Pretoria take the N4 freeway towards Witbank.
After Witbank the freeway becomes N4 (25 deg 53’ 51,84”S 29 deg 15’22,61”E)
A bit further you reach the first toll gate at Middleburg plaza. Your Tom Tom satnav may come in handy.
After this tollgate you get the Shell Ultra city on both sides of the highway.
Go past the Belfast turn off (Wimpy there) (25deg 42’58,61”S 30 deg 12’ 47,09”E)
Go pass Millie’s One Stop.(25deg 41’21,44”S 30 deg 12’47,09”E)
Next town Machadosdorp. Turn out of the freeway (25deg 39’20,83S 30 deg 14’ 40,39”E) into R36 going into town. When you see an old church on the right hand side turn left into R541.
Go through town, stock on consumables at the bottle store go past the post office and you are now going out of town heading south.
The road will start dropping and winding trough the “Screwfbergpass” and 38 Km after leaving Machadosdorp you will get to a T-junction that says Badplass to the right and Barberton to the left.
You take the Barberton way (R38) to the left. (25 deg 54’ 51,01”S 30 deg 35’ 58,62”E)
Go pass the dam wall of the Vyggerboom Dam (Fig tree lake) on the left hand side and turn left at the sign “Groot Kop”(big head for the English folk).(25deg52’19,21”S 30deg 39’09,68”E)
Travel this gravel road for about 4 km and you will see on the right hand side the signs for Komati Mine and Mondi Forests. Turn right at that point and travel on for another 8 km and you will go past a settlement (slowly you can buy beer there!).
A couple of hundred meters away you probably will see a wind sock and some cars parked under the trees.
This is the car park and the designated landing zone. (25deg47’43,88”S30 deg38’44,24”E).
The take off is on the mountain on your left hand as you arrive at the carpark. (25deg48’13,06”S30deg37’44,50”E)
